"As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God."
I was thinking of all the substitutes that we choose that are available in life, the substitutes that we choose to fill that come from the voids… our inner being that lets us know that something is missing or lacking. Some of these substitutes can be temporary fixes, but many times they can end in destructive behavior. Many of these choices are alcohol, drugs, shopping, and pornography, prostitution, gambling, even the pursuit of power, money, prestige, fame, and relationships… and the list goes on and on.
The best example I can share is when were thirsty and we need something to quench that thirst, there are many alternatives. Substitutes for water are juice, coffee, milk, energy drinks, beer, wine, pop/soda, exc. These may seem to be good choices, but ultimately the only thing that can quench our thirst is water. As a matter of fact, some of these substitutes will only make us thirstier.
Like the choices we make that we referred to above, these decisions ultimately keep us thirsty and keep the void alive. In my quest to fulfill my voids the conclusion I came up with is that God is the only thing that can quench that thirst.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." John 6:35
After making many wrong decisions that led to serious consequences, I realized that Gods love is the only thing that fulfilled the emptiness. How great was it to focus my attention on Jesus and results were more peace, joy, satisfaction, and true love for others. All the things that I thought I wanted turned to destruction but all the things that He wanted for me turned to a purposeful life.
As God recommends and not the world, here is His answer:
“…If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.” John 7:37
The greatest benefit that I have become aware of with God is that we have an eternal life with Him.
“…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14
