Watch What You Say

Did you ever have uncontrollable thoughts going through your mind that were continually reminding you that you would never amount to anything, you were too small, not fast enough, not smart enough, exc. Most of us have encountered at one time, especially at a young age, when somebody has said something to us that greatly influenced the direction or the path we started on. All too many times that one negative thought seems to have more power over us then all of the positive comments combined.

“The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell." James 3:6

While pondering some of the comments I have brought to memory through the years I realized how hurtful they were. So before we decide to react or to attack someone with our words, understand that those words can last a lifetime.

Most of the time those words (because of the relationship we have) are sent out to our children, our spouses, our parents, family and friends that we say we love the most. But if we really love them, we would watch what we say, respond or find the gold or the admirable qualities that each of those people have.

“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones."

Proverbs 16:24

The bible uses these metaphors to how powerful the tongue is and how evil it can be; It is compared to the rudder that steers the ship, the bit in the horse’s mouth that steers the horse, and the spark in the forest that can create a forest fire. The same holds true for one word spoken with ill effect can guide, direct, or spark a person into a negative spiral.

Let’s make a decision to edify, encourage, recognize, the people we love most and make sure we become part of their success story and not a part of their excuse for failure.

“With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.” James 3:9

Life and death is by the power of the tongue, so I’m sure all of us would rather give life than death! So let’s watch what we say and have a good day! :)

“but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.”

James 3:8
