Under the Circumstances (walking, talking, & hanging with Jesus)
Did you ever use the phrase “under the circumstances”?
Many times, we say “under the circumstances I’m doing pretty well” or you may say under the circumstances, I’m sure you would agree that I’m going through a struggle. Today I’ll share with you how to go from “under the circumstances” to taking authority over them. We all have times when we look at the circumstances and they seem overwhelming. What should we do at these times?
The Bible gives us the answer in a bible story when Jesus walked on water (Matthew 14:22-33). As the disciples were offshore in a boat Jesus from shore started to walk on the water. At first the disciples thought Jesus was a ghost and they were afraid. Jesus assured them it was him. Peter said if that is you Jesus tell me to come- Jesus told Peter to come. Peter started walking on the water and that’s what we should do, when Jesus tells us to come we can have the confidence to do whatever He asks. There are so many times when we take our focus off Jesus to put them on the circumstances that we begin to sink just like Peter did. The first thing we may do is call someone up and explain our struggles and we continue to focus on them. Many will share their circumstances. Unfortunately, when everybody focuses on them, we will only continue to sink deeper. Some advice to consider when you’re going through a difficult time and you feel like you’re sinking is to surround yourself with individuals that have a relationship with Jesus and will point you back to Him! They may want to pray with you and that would be awesome! The best advice would be for you to get in the habit to turn to Him as quick as possible! The Bible says “life and death are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21), so if we continue to talk about the circumstances, they will continue to overtake us. But what Peter did is that He called out to Jesus and Jesus saved him. They went on the boat and the storm calmed. Sometimes we have little faith that the God that created us the God that created the universe will be there for us. There are storms that continue to come one after another like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, fires and devastating winter storms. Personal storms seem to come frequently, so we need to have the trust and confidence in our Savior or we will be overwhelmed. He will help us!
In my situation with 23 minutes with no heartbeat, they told my wife I would be brain-dead or dead by the morning. I was definitely sinking, but my wife started a prayer chain that called out to Jesus and He reached down and he saved me. My wife could have focused on the negative diagnosis and realized based on them there was no hope. I’m sure at first like most of us she temporarily was paralyzed by the doctor’s report. I am so thankful she moved the focus from the circumstances to Jesus. There were individuals that I met after I got out of the hospital and pretty much what they said under your circumstances we didn’t think you were going to make it. Fortunately for me there were so many friends, associates and so many I will never know that believed and prayed. Wouldn’t you want to develop that relationship with Jesus and others so like Peter when he started to sink was saved and peace came to the storm? That’s what he did for me once I woke out of my coma- I realized I was blind, but at peace. I started to praise and worship the Lord as others pointed me back to Jesus and my ministry.
Today would be a great day to start a relationship or enrich it with Jesus. He can help us and give us peace as we move from under the circumstances to taking authority over them.
“Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” ‘“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Matthew 14:25-33
