Hanging with Jesus- The Promise of the Holy Spirit

As the disciples walked, talked, and hung with Jesus, He shared with them the promise of the Holy Spirit

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26

The Apostle Peter was one of those disciples that went from the transformation of following Jesus to receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit. He saw many miracles from the enormous catch of fish, feeding the thousands with a few loaves of bread and fish, to witnessing Jesus’ compassionate touch, healing the sick, and casting out unclean spirits.

Peter was far from perfect. He was rebuked and betrayed Jesus, but was used mightily. The same can be said about each and every one of us. We all fall short of the glory of God. Peter attempted to walk on water, started to sink, and Jesus reached out and saved him. Later, Jesus answered prayers as Peter miraculously escaped from prison. I’m sure we can all identify with Peter- some of us have seen miracles, some of us have been praised, corrected, have betrayed or been in situations that only an act of God is why we’re here today. We don’t have to be perfect we just have to believe. Like Peter, as long as we continue to walk, talk, and hang with Jesus, He also will use us mightily!

As Jesus was preparing himself for the cross, he shared with the disciples that it would be better that he left because of the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Comforter- the Holy Spirit was a gift and was to dwell within each and every believer. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit encourages, teaches, comforts, and reminds us of the truth, and at times when we don’t know what to pray for, the Spirit does. The Holy Spirit would make known whatever he hears from the Father. The Holy Spirit is knowledge and understanding. Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom.  The Holy Spirit will help you walk in God’s statutes and commandments. God’s love is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. There are so many more blessings of the Helper.

When we make a decision to follow Jesus, we have the promise of heaven, then come into relationship with the Father and the forgiveness of our sins. That’s a lot of love! There is something we don’t talk enough about, which is we then received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus shared with the apostles all the things he wanted them to do, like preach throughout the world and heal the sick. Peter at Pentecost was the start of that where 3000 came into relationship with the Lord in one day. Right after that Peter healed the crippled at the gate of the synagogue. When were in relationship with the Lord he will give each and every one of us our assignment? We can be assured with the power of the Holy Spirit we will accomplish it.  How exciting is it to know that once we make a decision to follow Jesus the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is dwelling in each and every one of us. We have all gone through trials, tribulations, and at times suffering. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we have endured. The Scripture says God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. So, when we are weak, he is strong. The Holy Spirit gives us the grace to forgive, love our enemies, and pray for those that persecute us. Since the time we were born until we were saved, we were subject to all the lies and deceit of the devil.  That caused a lot of destruction! Now, because of the Holy Spirit we know the truth and the truth will set us free! Praise God he has given us the Comforter! The Helper will transform us into the image of God.

Holy Spirit will bring the Scriptures alive. The truth will combat all the lies of the devil. Lies that make us feel unworthy insecure and take us out of relationship with the Lord. You are a child of God and this understanding will give you the confidence to live a victorious life. David as a young man faced a huge obstacle-Goliath! The spirit of the Lord was upon David and his God given destiny was to be king.  Goliath was standing in the way of that purpose and was defeated.  We all are David’s, because we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us and the purpose that God has poured into our hearts. So, whatever is standing in your way with the power of the Holy Spirit it has to go down. Keep walking, talking and hanging with Jesus!

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
